High school students excel at CIBRE summer camp
High school sophomore Erica Spitzley plans to use the new business skills she picked up at the first-ever Center for Integrated Business Research and Education (CIBRE) summer camp.
She intends to use them to counsel her father, who is about to create his own company. “My dad just got the go ahead to get his business started,” Spitzley said. “He said I can be his advisor now that I am learning about entrepreneurship.”
The camp’s goal is to teach the basics of business and foster an entrepreneurial spirit with high school students. Its method is to put business principles into practice rather than teach an abstract concept, according to Wayne Blizman, visiting instructor ...

Inspirational giving: The Elliott-Stinson Challenge match update
Last fall, SBA Dean Mohan Tanniru and I met with R. Hugh Elliott, a longtime OU supporter, and Craig Stinson (SBA ’84) to discuss how OU’s School of Business Administration is on the cusp of transformation. Based on their own leadership roles in the business community, they both knew that making this transformation wasn’t a matter of one or two people making a difference, but an entire movement of people. In this case alumni, faculty and students are the ones pivotal to shifting the SBA from a good school to a great one.

Social Capital: Good for your health?
School of Business Administration Economics Professor Sherman Folland was on sabbatical last year in Norway. As he walked the wintry streets, he noticed something different about the Norwegians. They hustled about with neither eye contact nor “hi-how-are-you?” greetings to one another. But if anybody slipped on the ice, Norwegians were there in a flash — lending a helping hand. This type of socially responsive community backs up data ranking Norway among countries with the highest levels of social capital. In economic ...

Funded by a grant from Chrysler, Janiak worked ...

An Analysis of the Financial Crisis of 2008: Causes and Solutions
Professor Austin Murphy (Finance) shares his research in regard to the fundamental causes of the current financial crisis. Close financial analysis indicates that theoretical modeling based on unrealistic assumptions led to serious problems in mispricing in the massive unregulated market for credit default swaps that exploded upon catalytic rises in residential mortgage defaults. Recent academic research implies solutions to the crisis that are appraised to be far less costly than a bailout of investors who made poor financial decisions with respect to credit analysis. See the

Amend WardsAuto.com, Jul 25, 2008 11:33 AM Outside of a likely sale of the Hummer division, General Motors Corp. stands by its multiple-brand strategy in North America even as its international operations suggest a leaner portfolio works better. Overseas operations continued to post impressive gains in the year's second quarter, growing 10% compared with year-ago, primarily driven by the emerging markets of Brazil, Russia, India and China. Yet, GM offers fewer brands internationally than in its home market, where eight nameplates vie for limited resources. International sales, led by strong brands ...
